Pla-Ground Family Farms

We hope everyone is staying warm in this bitterly cold weather this winter.
This has been one of the coldest winters we can remember and also have been
getting much more snow then we have in recent years.
With a combination of the snow and high winds we unfortunately had one of
our hog confinement buildings collapse. The good news is we were able to get
all the pigs out of it without losing any. It involved crawling on hands and
knees and a lot of complaining! Jody and Jay were both pretty happy that they
were not around to participate in this. They are escaping part of winter in
Florida and enjoying the relaxation of it all. However they still do get quite a
bit of office work done remotely.
In other news, Jay's daughter Jena has recently joined our operation and has
kept very busy with a lot of the administrative work and attempting to keep us
all organized. Nick, Luke, and Mitch and been busy this winter planning for
next years crop and attending educational meeting and conferences. As well
as taking care of the pigs along with Jason.
We wish everyone a safe and warm winter.
The Plagge family has been farming for many years, with the fourth generation now actively involved in the family farming operation in
north central Iowa. Pla-Ground Family Farms is a partnership consisting of Jay Plagge and his wife, Val; their daughter Jena; Jody
Plagge and his wife, Connie; their sons Mitch Plagge and his wife, Becky, Luke Plagge, Nick Plagge and Nick’s wife, Debbie. Each
member of the operation contributes his or her own set of strong skills and talents to the operation’s success.
Since Jody and Jay Plagge’s grandfather, Harry Jensen, began the operation in the 1940’s, the operation has grown from a typical small
farm to a thriving farm and swine finishing operation. Typically raising 70% corn and 30% soybeans on owned, rented, and
custom-farmed land. We have a large grain setup for storage and 2400 bushel per hour tower dryer to help keep our combines moving.
To help access several markets we have our own semis to transport grain. In tandem with the grain operation we have a custom hog
feeding business which consists of 13,500 hog spaces producing 33,750 market hogs a year.
Pla-Ground Family Farms, through hard work and integrity, will strive to continue its profitable expansion to secure a valuable legacy
for future generations. We plan to position ourselves for the future by growing our acres while carefully maintaining quality relationships
with neighbors, landowners, investors, and the community. We strive to maintain a positive and enjoyable work atmosphere for family
members and employees who share our love of farming and our goals. Our commitment to protecting the environment, worker care and
food safety is at the foundation of all we do. Landowners are a top priority for our operation and we will continue to care for their land as if
it were our own.
Pla-Ground Family Farms uses the latest technology including AutoTrac, GPS yield mapping, grid sampling, variable rate application,
and variable rate seeding to enhance our efficiencies in usage of fuel, fertilizer, and other inputs. Our managerial accounting system,
which produces detailed financial statements and field reports, coupled with professional consulting services help us make sound
strategic managerial decisions.
The Plagge Family is excited about the future of agriculture. Maintaining our strong family values, and work ethic will promote
sustainability, thus allowing future generations to join in our successful family farming operation.
